My particular case was just marginally different from the above in that I had to copy the usbscan.sys file to a different directory (C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepositor\.) than was given in the post above but after doing so the driver installed just fine. Then search your C: drive to find usbscan.sys file and copy it to that folder. Then go to the bottom of the log file and search upward for the phrase "cannot find the file specified." A few lines above that you should see "SourceFile - ", and just above that "SourcePath - ", where Path will be the path to the folder that is being searched for the usbscan.sys file.
DRVSTORE FOLDER VISTA HOW TO
Other than having to figure out how to get "permission" to do the copying, everything worked great, and the scanner is now functional.įor anybody with the same problem, I would suggest opening C:\Windows\inf\.

DRVSTORE FOLDER VISTA WINDOWS
There I learned that my driver installer was looking for usbscan.sys in a different Windows subfolder, and I copied it there. After reading RBBrittain's message, I took a look at C:\Windows\inf\. Then I found usbscan.sys in one of the Windows subfolders. Microsoft said I'd have to talk to Dell, who, after a good hour and moving up to a supervisor level, said that I had a compatibility problem, that usbscan.sys wasn't compatible with Vista, etc. Epson came close in recognizing that I needed a usbscan.sys file and told me that I needed to get it from Microsoft. I have had this problem of the "cannot find the file specified" message when trying to get my Epson RX700 printer/scanner to work with Vista. I just wanted to give a special thanks to RBBrittain. Which I reproduce the pertinent information below between two rows of asteriks "The system cannot find the file specified" EpsonĪnd got several hits but the one that provided the key was I was able to figure out what to do by doing a Google on the strings below I want to make it clear that Epson technical support was of no help whatsoever.

I was finally able to get my EPSON driver to install. However I still get "The system cannot find the file specified" error.
DRVSTORE FOLDER VISTA INSTALL
I might add that things have "improved" since I applied Vista Service Pack 1 in that it could not discover the driver for the EPSON Perfection 2400 scanner in the Imaging Devices files in Device Manager before that install nor did it point me to the ESP web site to download the Vista twain drivers before then. In almost all cases Windows Vista can find a compatible driver but it always seems to encounter an error when actually installing the driver and says that "The system cannot find the file specified". It fails when I pick the twain folder above, c:\plecusb.drv, or any of the common driver folders in c:\windows\system32 like DRIVERSTORE or DRVSTORE.
DRVSTORE FOLDER VISTA SOFTWARE
I get the same error whether I point back to the twain folder that the epson download installed or to whatever folder that Windows Vista uses when you go through Device Manager and select "Browse my computer for driver software" and take the "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" option or the "Browse for driver software on my computer option". What you are suggesting is exactly what I stated doing in the post I made at 07:20 last night. Any help or ideas anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. I get the same error when I pick from the twain driver file that is supposed to contain the Vista drivers for the 2400. It finds the EPSON 2400 Scanner under Imaging Devices but it fails as above when it tries to install the driver. I even attempted to install them via the Device Manager wherein the scanner shows under Other Devices and I have Vista scan my computer for compatible drivers. I have tried several times to uninstall and reinstall the espon recommended Vista drivers to no avail. The system cannot find the file specified. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
